In the words of Eric Salvador, NSCA, NSAM head instructor at The Fhitting Room in New York City, “A high-intensity workout increases the body's need for oxygen during the effort and creates an oxygen shortage, causing your body to ask for more oxygen during recovery. This afterburn effect is referred to as Excess Post–Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) and is the reason why intense exercise will help burn more fat and calories than regular aerobic and steady-state workouts."

Introduction to HIIT Training Adelaide: High-Intensity Interval Training is known as HIIT training in short; according to its definition HIIT Training is intense, short, unsustainable bursts of physical activity which are paired with active and or short rests intervals. A metabolic disturbance takes place due to the intense HIIT training, which results in the body burning calories at a faster rate, up to 48–72 hours post workout. The intensive training not only increases metabolism, but also brings about an improvement in the cardiac function, causes the reduction in insulin resistance, and improves anaerobic and endurance levels, at a greater rate when compared to steady rate cardio training.
